Stuck in the Doldrums?

Have you been in the doldrums lately? I’ve been hearing from many entrepreneurs, friends, and colleagues that my feelings of blah-ness are not owned solely by me. We could put it down as the change of seasons, or change of weather, planetary transits, or Mercury Retrograde.

The truth is, if the doldrums have hit you, for whatever reason, it’s really hard to get motivated to do the things you know are necessary to be successful in your business. Things like checking into SEO, connecting with your list, attending networking meetings, working with your clients, having strategy meetings.

Blogging is one very important way to connect, yet the doldrums can really put a damper on your creativity. Ideas won’t come, words won’t flow. The “zone” is a distant memory or something on your wishlist.

When you’re in the groove and the flow, nothing can stop you. Words and sentences and paragraphs just fllloooowww out, like a river. Right?

Until they don’t. Like when you have set a deadline for yourself to get something posted on your blog by xxx date. Then it’s a drought. The great ideas and inspirations are as dry as California is right now (we’re currently in the worst drought ever).

That’s where I’ve been this past week. All the great ideas were, well, blowing through the landscape of my brain like tumbleweeds. One could almost hear the call of the wolves in the moonlight….

But I digress.

We can find all kinds of things to do instead of writing a blog post, right? Like watching kitty videos. (Aww, look at the kitty….)

I had to get myself out of the doldrums. I started doodling. Then I took a nap. Then I watched another kitty video. I was feeling kind of sorry for myself, to be honest.

I remembered an article I had read in the New York Times about lists. How people love lists because they help our brains to organize things. I love lists! I thought if I made a list of things that I love and am grateful for, I’d get inspired to write the blog post.

I started with making a list of things I love about my business. Then I thought of other things I could make a list of, then another list. I ended up with a “list of lists”!

Lists fill our desire for bite-sized, digestible morsels of information, humor, tips for personal growth.

The next time you are in the entrepreneur doldrums, try a little pick-me-up to remind yourself how brilliant you are. How much value you bring to the world, to your clients, and to the significant people in your life.

Get out your journal, start writing, and observe the creative ideas that begin to appear for you. Make a list to thwart those doldrums and start the juices flowing.
