Are You Guilty of Business-cide?

Taxes, Trauma, and Tapping

It’s Tax time here in the US, maybe for you too wherever you are. It’s a cultural norm that Taxes are  something really horrible. This time of year seems to bring up all kinds of issues — fear of the IRS, fear of the deadline (April 15), fear of making a mistake and triggering an audit, fear of not having the right information, fear of having to pay. Wow.

I have always done my own taxes. I can’t say I enjoy it, but I really don’t mind it. I like to fill out forms, for one thing. I also like to see how my income changed from the year prior. Now that I have my own business, this is especially interesting.

Of course, as my burliness grows, my taxes get more complicated. Taxes are a bit more complicated for entrepreneurs generally. Running a business requires more diligent record-keeping but also provides extra benefits — deductions that lower tax obligation.

The Trouble arises when the process of filing Taxes opens the doors to all kinds of beliefs (and fears) about money. It can actually Trigger a money Trauma. An actual financial trauma that has lived in your subconscious probably since childhood.

Birth of Your Money Story

Right now, briefly, close your eyes and imagine yourself at about 6 or 7 years old. Can you see your parents or caregivers working on their Taxes? or balancing a checkbook? or paying bills? What are they saying? How do they seem to your childhood Self? Were they arguing? Did they seem stressed out? Could you sense a change in their moods?

It’s okay, take a deep breath and let it go. You might want to write down any insight you just picked up.

Your childhood Self may not have understood what was going on but your subconscious registered it and filed it. Your parents’ beliefs and actions around money became yours, and developed into a Money Story that runs in the background every time you look at, think about, manage, spend, or save money — or file your Taxes. Those beliefs are Terrible because they are so strong, and invisible. You don’t even realize they are there! If you think about it though. I’ll bet you can think of a time recently when your parent’s words came out of your mouth. Something like, “money doesn’t grow on trees,” or “rich people are greedy,” or “You have to work hard to make money,” or “I can’t afford it.”  If a phrase like that is coming up for you right now, write it down.

The Good News: Tapping

Here’s a T word that brings us good news: Tapping. Using Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT/Tapping) on these beliefs reduces their influence on us, sometimes clearing them entirely, so you have room to develop a Money Story that energizes your Money Mojo. Room to own your Power, shine your Brilliance, make more money and make an impact in an even bigger way. Magnetizing your Money Mojo to create the life—and business—you want. And it doesn’t have to be hard!

  1. I LOVE THIS! How did you know I have been in “Tax Return” H$%& all weekend and yesterday especially. I SO needed your tapping script. What a brilliant idea! Thank you Linda!

  2. Brilliant, Linda!

And timely, since we are groaning under the yearly ritual of prepping our taxes. The tapping helped, so thank you.

I discovered I wasn’t as concerned about getting the taxes done (thank you, TurboTax!); rather, I felt anxious about not having everything ready so that when my husband and I go to do them, I don’t “let him down.”

Thanks for the insight and the opportunity to clear it out (at least a little bit). 🙂

    Big hugs, Anne
